Prepare for winter disruption

A UK winter planning guide for home, travel, power and communications before severe weather makes decisions harder.

24 hours before

  1. Check the latest Met Office forecast and warnings for your area and planned route.
  2. Charge phones and power banks and make sure torches, warm layers and essential medicines are accessible.
  3. Review travel, childcare and work alternatives rather than waiting until conditions deteriorate.
  4. Secure loose outdoor items if high winds are forecast and know who you may need to check on.

Before travelling

Decide whether the journey is necessary using current warnings and local conditions. If travelling, carry appropriate warm clothing, a charged phone, water and basic winter items suitable for the route.

At home

Know how you will manage light, communications, warmth and essential power needs if weather causes a wider outage.

READY/ is independent.
