Prepare for a water outage

A practical UK household guide to drinking-water planning, supplier contacts and the decisions to make before the taps stop.

Before an interruption

  1. Know who supplies your water and keep the outage contact details somewhere accessible offline.
  2. Know where your internal stop tap is and make sure it is accessible.
  3. Build a modest household supply gradually, considering people, pets, baby needs and any medical requirement.
  4. Store water sensibly and rotate it rather than creating waste.

If supply is interrupted

Check your water supplier’s live information first. If a boil-water, do-not-drink or do-not-use notice is issued, follow that notice exactly; a generic preparedness guide should never override it.

Make the quantity household-specific

The useful step is not owning a generic checklist; it is calculating a sensible household target and recording extra needs before the incident.

READY/ is independent.
During a live incident, follow current instructions from emergency services, utilities and public authorities. Call 999 if someone is in immediate danger.
